Salary: USD 214,000 - 309,000 / annual
Prefect is seeking a Staff Platform Engineer to join the Prefect Cloud team and help build and scale the next generation agentic orchestration platform. You will report to the Director of Engineering for Prefect Cloud.
In this role, you will establish strategies for maintaining high service quality by identifying appropriate service-level indicators and defining error budgets. You'll bring strong technical judgment to ambiguous problems, determining when to prototype, when to harden systems, and how to make tradeoffs visible to stakeholders.
You will lead operationally mature work: writing maintainable code, building for reliability, participating in on-call and incident response, and continuously improving the systems you own. You'll proactively identify opportunities to enhance user experience for both customers and internal stakeholders through performance engineering, observability improvements, and automation enhancements.
A key responsibility is raising the technical bar for the team through design feedback, code review, mentoring, and clear written communication. You'll leverage AI-powered development tools effectively in planning, implementation, review, testing, and iteration while maintaining strong independent judgment.
Required qualifications include extensive experience operating and optimizing large-scale distributed systems in production, with expertise in observability and self-healing techniques. You should have hands-on experience managing production services in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and familiarity with monitoring tools such as DataDog, Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry. Experience operating production systems in high-growth startup environments and knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools like Kubernetes and Terraform are essential.
