DeepL is seeking a Staff Platform Engineer to own the reliability, capacity, and cost efficiency of its hybrid compute infrastructure spanning AWS and on-premises hardware. You will take technical ownership of the Kubernetes control plane, node lifecycle, networking, storage, and core cluster services that power both DeepL's AI products and research operations. Key responsibilities include designing and operating production-grade Kubernetes clusters across cloud and on-prem environments, deepening the hybrid infrastructure model to unify workload execution, and defining infrastructure-as-code standards and platform architecture. You will drive technical decisions at the track level, mentor engineers across the infrastructure team, lead incident response for hybrid systems, and build consensus across engineering teams to ship platform improvements. You bring deep hands-on Kubernetes expertise with experience designing, building, and operating clusters at scale through their full lifecycle. You have substantial depth in either public cloud (AWS preferred) or on-prem infrastructure, with credibility to work across both. You can debug networking and Linux issues from container through host to network edge, apply infrastructure-as-code with Terraform and GitOps tooling like ArgoCD in production environments, and write software in Go or Python at the level of building tools other engineers depend on. You have a track record of technical ownership spanning multiple teams, creating clarity across mandate boundaries, holding and evolving technical positions based on evidence, and carrying other engineers with you. You demonstrate strong incident-management and reliability-engineering discipline with an ownership mindset for building resilient systems. Bonus experience includes GPU infrastructure for training or inference at scale, distributed storage systems like Ceph in production, serving researchers or data scientists as platform customers, and BGP-level networking in hybrid or on-prem environments. DeepL is a global AI company founded in 2017 with ~1,000 employees across 228 markets, backed by Benchmark, IVP, and Index Ventures. The company is building secure, intelligent AI solutions with a focus on language technology and trusted AI.
