Clutch is Canada's largest online used car retailer on a mission to reinvent how people buy, sell, and own cars. The company has achieved significant growth, earning recognition on the Globe & Mail's Top Growing Companies list for five consecutive years and spots on Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 and Fast 500 lists. Backed by world-class investors including D1 Capital and Canaan, Clutch operates across multiple Canadian provinces and continues to scale rapidly.
This is a foundational opportunity to build Platform Engineering from the ground up at Clutch. As the first dedicated Staff Platform Engineer, you'll define the platform strategy and establish the function that enables the entire engineering organization to move faster, ship safer, and operate at scale. Rather than maintaining infrastructure, you'll architect and build the internal developer platform, self-service tooling, and engineering workflows that become the foundation for how engineering operates company-wide.
Key responsibilities include defining and executing Clutch's Platform Engineering strategy, building and evolving the Internal Developer Platform to improve developer productivity, owning the architecture of CI/CD platforms and deployment workflows, designing and scaling cloud infrastructure using AWS and Terraform, and establishing platform standards and reusable infrastructure patterns across the organization. You'll work closely with engineering leadership to identify organization-wide technical problems and build long-term solutions that create leverage for dozens of engineers.
The ideal candidate brings 8+ years of experience building cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, DevOps, or developer tooling at scale. You should have proven experience operating as a Staff Engineer or senior individual contributor driving technical strategy across multiple teams, deep expertise with AWS, Terraform, Docker, and modern CI/CD platforms, and a strong software engineering mindset with experience building tooling in Python, Go, JavaScript, or similar languages. Experience designing scalable developer platforms, deployment systems, or engineering enablement tooling is essential. You'll need excellent written communication and documentation skills, the ability to influence engineers and technical leadership, and comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment with significant ownership and ambiguity. Nice-to-have skills include experience with feature flagging platforms, monorepo tooling, and Internal Developer Platform design.
Clutch offers autonomy and ownership to shape your process and influence the company at every level, the opportunity to help define the future of car buying in Canada, top-of-market compensation packages, and above-market health and dental benefits starting from day one. The role is permanent, full-time, and hybrid with three days per week in downtown Toronto.
