Salary: USD 133,000 - 173,000 / annual

Element Biosciences is seeking a Staff Optical Systems Engineer to lead optical systems development for their multiomic discovery platforms, from concept through commercialization. This role reports to the Senior Director of Systems & Optical Engineering and is based on-site in San Diego. You will drive requirements gathering, design, review, and verification of optical components and systems. Key responsibilities include developing optical modules, schematics, simulations, and technical specifications; building and integrating complex optical systems encompassing imaging, illumination, and autofocus capabilities; and developing testing methodologies to characterize performance. You'll perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis, evaluate design trade-offs for performance, cost, and manufacturability, and manage new product introduction (NPI) activities. Additional responsibilities include vendor identification and evaluation, collaborative project management, and conducting theoretical and experimental research into emerging imaging technologies. You'll work cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, software, supply chain, manufacturing, and field service teams, and stay current with advancements in optics, photonics, and imaging. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering or related field with 7+ years of relevant industry experience (or equivalent advanced education/experience combination). You must have experience commercializing scientific imaging devices, preferably fluorescent microscopy systems. Essential expertise includes optical design principles and tools (geometrical and physical optics), optical component selection (lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, mounts, sensors, light sources), and proficiency with optical design software such as Zemax or Code V. Strong hands-on experience with optical and optomechanical system integration and alignment is required, along with programming skills for image and data analysis. Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills are essential, with ability to thrive in fast-paced, interdisciplinary environments. This is a full-time, exempt position with travel up to 5%. Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
