Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket to deliver payloads to orbit and advance commercial spaceflight. The Tooling and Factory Automation team designs and develops manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and automation systems that enable rocket production at scale.
As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Tooling team, you will lead the design and development of high-quality production tooling and factory automation solutions for the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs. You'll work at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and automation, translating top-level requirements into functional delivered equipment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop innovative tooling and automation solutions for vehicle and engine manufacturing
- Design a wide range of equipment including material handling systems, assembly fixtures, off-loaders, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines
- Apply sound mechanical design principles and ASME Y14.5 drafting standards to create precise tooling definitions
- Integrate concepts across multiple concurrent projects of varying scale in a fast-paced environment
- Collaborate closely with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration teams to optimize for safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, and maintainability
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers on the team
- Influence factory automation strategy as Relativity scales production across existing and future facilities
You'll have significant autonomy to make design decisions, propose solutions, and see your work implemented on the factory floor. The role offers the opportunity to shape how rockets and factories are built, working on tangible hardware that directly enables production scaling.
