Lumilens is building photonics infrastructure for AI supercomputing, developing high-speed optical interconnects and photonic engines. The company is Series B funded and led by industry veterans. As Staff Mechanical Automation Engineer, you will lead mechanical design, analysis, and qualification of automation systems, tooling, and fixtures for high-volume, high-reliability production of optical and electro-mechanical assemblies. This is a senior technical role with significant influence on manufacturing and tooling strategy. Key responsibilities include: leading mechanical design and DFM reviews for optical assemblies optimized for high-yield manufacturing; owning tolerance analysis (worst-case and statistical) for automated assembly and test processes; performing FEA validation of structural integrity, stiffness, vibration, and durability of fixtures and automation hardware; developing thermal models to predict and mitigate thermal drift and expansion mismatch; designing, prototyping, and qualifying automated jigs and fixtures from concept through production; designing mechanical structures for ICT and functional test compatibility; driving root-cause investigations for mechanical and fixture-related yield issues; collaborating cross-functionally with Process, Automation, Test, and Quality Engineering teams; creating design documentation, drawings, FMEAs, and validation reports; and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers. Required qualifications: hands-on DFM experience with optical or opto-mechanical assemblies (transceivers, fiber interconnects, lenses); proficiency in worst-case and statistical tolerance stack-up analysis; practical FEA expertise (ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation); ability to model thermal behavior during assembly and test; demonstrated experience designing and qualifying jigs and fixtures for automated manufacturing; experience with ICT-compatible mechanical structures; Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field with 8+ years manufacturing/automation engineering experience; proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo) and GD&T; strong understanding of manufacturing processes (SMT, adhesive bonding, press-fit, laser welding); and demonstrated cross-functional success in fast-paced manufacturing environments. Preferred: optical transceiver, photonics, or fiber-optic interconnect manufacturing experience; robotics or motion-control integration experience; SPC and Design for Six Sigma familiarity; panelized PCBA and panel-level fixture design experience; and knowledge of GR&R, MSA, and process capability studies.
