Form Energy is hiring a Staff Materials Engineer to join the Air Electrode Engineering team at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV. You will play a critical role in designing and validating key components for iron-air battery systems—long-duration energy storage technology that keeps the electric grid secure and reliable during extended stress periods. Reporting to the Manager of Air Electrode Engineering, you will own the design and validation of electrode materials, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability across mass manufacturing lines. Your responsibilities include partnering with vendors, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, and process engineers to transition materials and designs from prototype to high-volume production. You will drive hands-on design efforts including prototyping, failure analysis, specification-setting, and material evaluation. You will develop and implement novel material characterization techniques to enable quality control on production lines and independently apply engineering judgment to recommend disposition decisions on materials and electrodes, balancing design, performance, and reliability requirements against manufacturing realities. You bring 7+ years of experience in materials science or materials engineering, with 3+ years of hands-on product development experience navigating the R&D-to-manufacturing transition. You are fluent in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and understand how manufacturing constraints shape design decisions. You have demonstrated experience planning rigorous engineering trials via Design of Experiments (DOE) and interpreting complex experimental datasets using statistical tools such as JMP or Minitab. You are skilled with engineering tools such as FMEA and RCA for risk tracking and mitigation. You communicate clearly—both verbally and in writing—and can influence cross-functional stakeholders and summarize complex technical conclusions for technical and non-technical audiences. You are pragmatic, growth-minded, and operate effectively amid complexity in fast-paced environments. You are willing to travel domestically up to 10% of the time. Form Energy, founded in 2017, has been named by TIME as a "Best Invention," MIT Technology Review as a "Top Climate Tech Company To Watch," and Fast Company as "One of the Next Big Things In Tech." The company has signed contracts with leading electric utilities and is scaling battery manufacturing at its West Virginia facility. Relocation assistance is available.
