Form Energy is seeking a Staff Materials Engineer to join the Anode Design and Performance Team, a world-class group of materials, battery, test, and process engineering experts focused on understanding, designing, and validating Form Energy's iron negative electrode (anode). This role sits at the intersection of materials and battery engineering, requiring deep expertise in both domains.
You will create specifications for iron electrode materials and processes grounded in property-to-performance linkages, and design, execute, and interpret electrochemical tests that validate materials in lab-scale, large-scale test vehicles, and field-deployed batteries. Key responsibilities include:
- Prioritize safety throughout the electrochemical testing and battery operation lifecycle, from design through implementation and post-test investigation.
- Develop materials specifications for iron electrode components backed by mechanistic understanding of electrochemistry and define inspection methods to ensure product quality.
- Design and execute anode electrochemical tests across scales, identifying and closing performance gaps between R&D and product-scale operations.
- Own root cause analyses and FMEAs on electrode materials and electrochemical devices, driving corrective actions.
- Characterize electrode materials pre- and post-test, collaborating with internal experts and external vendors to develop new characterization techniques.
- Lead cross-functional project teams developing new anode materials and processes, mentoring team members with your expertise.
You bring 7+ years spanning materials engineering and electrochemical/battery systems, with demonstrated ability to build property-to-performance relationships through experimental design and statistical analysis. Hands-on experience with materials processing (powder metallurgy, etc.) and electrochemical device testing in deployed or market-ready products is essential. Expertise in failure prediction methods (RCA, FMEA) and statistical design software (JMP, Minitab) required. Bachelor's in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field; PhD preferred. Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with willingness to travel up to 25% to other Form Energy sites and suppliers.
