Mainspring Energy manufactures fuel-flexible, low-emissions local power solutions, with hundreds of megawatts in advanced development and field operations for Fortune 500 companies, data centers, and utilities. The company began commercial shipments of its Mainspring Linear Generators in 2020 and partners with global energy leaders including AEP, NextEra Energy Resources, and Schneider Electric. This Staff Materials and Process Engineer role is a high-impact opportunity to join a world-class engineering team and help scale production of the Linear Generator. The materials and process team works on complex development projects at the intersection of properties, performance, and processing of diverse materials—non-ferrous, ferrous, coatings, graphite, and polymers. Key responsibilities include leading independent process development and material validation of graphite components and tribological systems; collaborating with Materials and Engineering teams to characterize graphite properties, identify failure modes, and execute validation tests; creating and optimizing material and process specifications; writing specifications, process control, and quality control plans; qualifying processes and establishing key process controls at manufacturing locations; participating in FMEA for design, process, and maintenance; and supporting the team with failure analysis and process development projects. Required qualifications: MS in Materials Science/Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of industry experience, or PhD with 5+ years. Deep understanding of isostatic graphite structure, properties, and performance, including manufacturing processes; fundamental understanding of engineering materials and structure-property relationships; and working knowledge of FMEA. Highly preferred: volume production experience with graphite components and knowledge of dry tribology relative to ceramic or graphite materials. Must demonstrate experience with statistical data analysis and reporting (Matlab/Python, Excel, Weibull++, etc.) and excellent communication skills in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. This is an onsite position at Mainspring's Menlo Park headquarters. Compensation includes base salary, pre-IPO stock options, and benefits.
