Adyen is seeking a Staff Java Engineer to serve as the principal architect and strategic engineering partner for the Merchant Fraud Prevention group. In this role, you will define the long-term technical vision across 2–3 engineering teams, ensuring platforms can detect and prevent evolving fraud vectors at scale.
Key responsibilities include owning the multi-year technical roadmap for the group and designing high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems capable of processing real-time merchant transactions, integrating complex machine learning models, and handling massive big data pipelines. You will partner closely with the Group Engineering Director to evaluate organizational health, identify systematic engineering bottlenecks, and align technical investments with merchant protection goals.
You will standardize engineering practices, architectural patterns, and quality bars across fraud-focused teams, driving clarity when new fraud vectors or product requirements emerge. As a talent multiplier, you will actively sponsor and mentor senior engineers, design growth paths, and cultivate a culture of rigorous peer review and psychological safety.
Collaboration with Data Science and ML Engineering teams is essential to ensure infrastructure supports rapid model deployment, feature stores, and real-time inference without compromising transaction speed or system reliability. You will also proactively shape the strategic roadmap in partnership with engineering leadership and product teams.
Ideal candidates have a track record of defining long-term technical strategy through strong architectural thinking and excellent communication. You bring extensive experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems prioritizing reliability, performance, and resilience. Deep understanding of security-by-design, KYC, identity verification, and regulated data handling is required. Experience building production-grade interfaces powered by LLMs, including RAG architectures and secure data handling, is valued.
