Built is an AI-powered platform transforming real estate finance and construction management. The company powers over 350 lenders, 80,000+ borrowers and owners, and manages $300 billion in active projects. Built's software governs how capital moves through construction projects, including AI-driven draw management, portfolio risk tools, compliance workflows, and banking system integrations.
The Marketplace team is expanding Built beyond workflow software into adjacent services like inspections, appraisals, insurance, and materials sourcing. This is a newly independent business unit with a collaborative culture and strong mentorship practices.
As a Staff Innovation Engineer, you will work across three core areas: architecting durable platform systems, taking new product ideas from concept to customer pilot (typically 30 days), and optimizing products already in market. This is a hands-on individual contributor role—not people management—but at the staff level you will drive system design on major initiatives and mentor other engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
**Platform & Primitives**: Design and build reusable microservices and asynchronous workflows (e.g., Temporal) that every Marketplace product depends on—purchase orders, contract terms, invoicing, workflow state machines. Work is judged on maintainability, scalability, reliability, and flexibility.
**New Product Bets**: Partner directly with customers to scope problems, ship working prototypes within ~30 days, and iterate weekly on feedback. Form and test hypotheses with discipline—knowing when to push, pivot, or walk away.
**Adoption & Optimization**: For launched products, focus on quality, craftsmanship, and driving adoption—optimizing workflows and making products the best version for existing customers.
**AI-Native Development**: Build agent harnesses and layered prompting systems that automate real workflows. Extract and reason over unstructured documents (loan covenants, plans, appraisals) using AWS Textract, GCP Document AI, and models like Claude, Gemini, and OpenAI. Choose the right tool based on document type and cost profile.
The role demands high engineering standards in a domain where precision, reliability, and performance have direct financial consequences. You'll work in a fast-moving environment that values bold problem-solving, customer outcomes, urgency, ownership, and continuous excellence.
