Built is an AI-powered platform transforming real estate finance and construction management. The company powers over $300 billion in annual capital for 340+ lenders, including 45 of the top 100 U.S. banks, and serves 80,000+ borrowers and owners across 86,000 active projects.
The Marketplace team is expanding Built beyond workflow software into adjacent services—inspections, appraisals, insurance, and materials sourcing. As a Staff Innovation Engineer, you'll work across three core areas: architecting durable platform systems, taking new product ideas from concept to pilot within ~30 days, and optimizing products already in market.
Key responsibilities include:
**Platform & Primitives**: Design and build reusable microservices and asynchronous workflows (e.g., Temporal-based orchestration) that underpin all Marketplace products—purchase orders, contract terms, invoicing, state machines. Work is evaluated on maintainability, scalability, reliability, and flexibility.
**New Product Bets**: Partner directly with customers to scope problems, ship working prototypes in 30 days, and iterate weekly on feedback. Form and test hypotheses with discipline—knowing when to push, pivot, or walk away.
**Adoption & Optimization**: For launched products, focus on quality, craftsmanship, and driving adoption—optimizing workflows and user experience.
**AI-Native Development**: Build agent harnesses and layered prompting systems that automate real workflows. Extract and reason over unstructured documents (loan covenants, plans, appraisals) using AWS Textract, GCP Document AI, and models like Claude, Gemini, and OpenAI. Build internal eval tooling to test and improve systems before and after shipping.
**Cross-functional collaboration**: Partner with product, design, sales, and the GM to understand customer problems and inform pricing, GTM, and scale/pivot/kill decisions.
**Mentorship**: Guide other engineers through code review and pairing; contribute to system design and architecture decisions across the team.
This is a hands-on building role—not people management—but at the staff level you drive system design on major initiatives and mentor peers. The Marketplace team is tight-knit, tenured, and collaborative with a strong culture of mentorship and code review.
