Turion Space is building critical infrastructure for the space economy through vertically integrated hardware and software. The company develops DROID space vehicles and Starfire, a comprehensive software suite for simulation, modeling, planning, and operations. As a Staff Ground Software Engineer, you will define, design, and build next-generation Mission Control systems that spacecraft operators depend on daily. These systems command real satellites, process high-volume telemetry downlinks, and enable split-second operational decisions for missions worth millions of dollars. You will work across the full software lifecycle: shaping overall architecture, setting technical direction, building core services, and mentoring engineers as the team scales. Key technical challenges include: - Scale: designing systems handling massive telemetry streams and globally distributed operations - Speed: optimizing end-to-end latency for real-time operator response to spacecraft events - Availability: ensuring mission-critical services remain resilient, fault-tolerant, and highly reliable - Observability: building tools, metrics, and instrumentation for deep system insight - Security: protecting command paths and operational workflows against evolving threats You will collaborate with mission operators, flight software engineers, and cross-functional teams to ensure ground systems are intuitive, robust, and ready for increasing mission complexity. Key responsibilities include leading the software engineering process from concept to orbit-ready systems; mentoring engineering teams; engaging with satellite operators to translate space operations challenges into elegant solutions; architecting mission-critical systems including Mission Control, Autonomy platforms, and data pipelines; driving architectural decisions for systems requiring higher reliability than traditional tech; and delivering solutions that simplify space operations. Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field; 8+ years software development experience with project/team leadership track record; expertise in backend development and cloud-native architectures; proven ability designing and testing complex systems; experience operating live commercial SaaS products; on-call experience for mission-critical operations; eligibility for Top Secret clearance. Preferred qualifications include active US security clearance, Go proficiency, Kubernetes expertise, AWS expertise (EKS, EC2, Batch, S3, Lambda), data engineering and real-time processing experience, and passion for space exploration.
