Mattermost is seeking a Staff Full Stack Engineer to drive technical architecture and strategy for its core web platform, which serves defense, intelligence, security, and critical infrastructure sectors. The role spans Go backend and React/TypeScript frontend, with responsibility for setting technical direction across multiple engineering teams.
Key responsibilities include defining and driving the technical architecture roadmap for the core web platform; establishing org-wide standards for AI-agentic engineering workflows (Claude Code, Cursor); leading internal tooling and testing infrastructure strategy; owning testing strategy and quality standards across frontend and backend; driving architectural decisions for REST and WebSocket API design; partnering with security, compliance, and product leadership on strategic technical decisions; mentoring senior engineers; and contributing to the open-source codebase.
Required qualifications: Senior full-stack development experience in Go and React (or comparable stack) with proven ability to own complex systems end-to-end; experience designing and owning distributed systems or high-availability service architecture at scale; REST and WebSocket API design experience with solid networking fundamentals; PostgreSQL and relational database expertise including schema design and query optimization; daily fluency with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) for scaffolding, refactors, code review, and test generation; demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without formal authority; experience mentoring senior engineers and raising technical bar; comfort operating in regulated, high-compliance environments (enterprise security, government, critical infrastructure).
Nice-to-have qualifications include prior staff/principal/technical lead experience at other companies; open-source project maintenance experience; familiarity with compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, ITAR); experience scaling engineering practices across growing organizations; background in defense, intelligence, or critical infrastructure products; and experience building tools or workflows on top of AI coding agents.
Success in the first 90 days means shipping a meaningful full-stack feature on the core platform while assessing the technical landscape and identifying high-leverage architectural or process improvements.
