Verkada is seeking a founding Staff Frontend Engineer to architect the next-generation Spatial Platform—a greenfield initiative to transform static floor plans into a high-performance, interactive, collaborative 3D engine. This is a core infrastructure role that will support 8+ product lines across Verkada's physical AI platform, which serves 30,000+ customers (including 100+ Fortune 500 companies) across 170+ countries.
In this role, you will own the technical architecture of a spatial visualization and editing platform. Key responsibilities include:
**Rendering & Performance**: Design a high-performance rendering architecture supporting both an interactive viewer for dense geospatial visualization and a precision editing surface for real-time vertex manipulation. Solve the "500-element wall" challenge using partial GPU buffer updates and custom shaders to achieve sub-millisecond input latency.
**UX & Polish**: Partner with Design to define the interaction model for spatial editing—easing curves, snapping behavior, cursor states, loading transitions—and maintain pixel-level polish across the platform.
**Spatial Intelligence**: Develop power-user tools including real-time 3D line-of-sight analysis, signal strength heatmaps, and AI-driven hardware placement suggestions.
**Collaborative Sync Engine**: Own the client-side CRDT architecture (Yjs/Automerge-class) powering offline-first, multi-user editing, including document model, local persistence, presence, and conflict resolution.
**Required Qualifications**:
- 5+ years building complex, customer-facing web applications or high-performance graphics engines
- Mastery of JavaScript fundamentals and React expertise (React Query, Zustand, etc.)
- CS degree or equivalent with strong intuition for data structures, memory management, and linear algebra
- Pixel-perfect execution mindset; you notice half-pixel misalignments and 16ms jank
- Ability to bridge CAD-level precision with consumer-grade UX
- Understanding of coordinate system conversions, geospatial projections, and 3D geometry
**Nice-to-Haves**: Graphics stack experience (Deck.gl, MapLibre, Three.js, WebGL/WebGPU), real-time sync architectures, low-level web performance, PostGIS/vector tiling, GIS workflows.
This is a founding-stage role offering the opportunity to architect a core pillar of Verkada's infrastructure before the company goes public.
