Salary: CAD 186,368 - 223,642 / annual
Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Frontend Engineer to join the DataViz squad, responsible for building and evolving Grafana's visualization capabilities. The DataViz team enables users to visualize data in intuitive, easy-to-understand ways that surface valuable insights. Recent projects include externalizing core visualizations for independent releases, building GraphViz for relationship/flow visualization, improving test coverage and visual regression testing, and refreshing the look and feel of existing visualizations like Table and Gauge.
In this role, you will lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout, including gathering user feedback and measuring impact. You'll mentor and collaborate with other engineers, raising the engineering bar through code review, design feedback, and pairing on complex problems. You'll participate in on-call rotations for the services you help build and serve as a force multiplier during incident response. You'll provide technical support for customer escalations and help identify areas of friction to address. Cross-squad collaboration is key—you'll represent the team's work, write design proposals, run demos, and advocate for the roadmap in cross-team discussions.
The tech stack is primarily TypeScript, React, uPlot, and eCharts. The work is open source; you can browse grafana/grafana on GitHub to see how the software is built. REQUIREMENTS:
- Technical leadership: solid experience leading teams through projects, mentoring engineers, and serving as a force multiplier; clear communication in fully remote, asynchronous environments
- Ownership mindset: experience being on-call, supporting production software, ensuring reliability, and responding to incidents
- Complex problem-solving: self-starter capable of tackling complex engineering challenges with minimal supervision; experience building production software systems
- User focus and pragmatism: ability to break complex problems into short feedback loops (analyze, design, MVP, learn, iterate)
- AI experience with practical mindset: familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks; focus on delivering high-quality, real-world solutions
- Community engagement: care for the Grafana user and contributor community; keen to be an active community contributor
- Intellectual curiosity, transparency, bias toward action, and collaborative teamwork
BONUS:
- Open-source contribution or maintainership; comfort engaging communities in the open
- Active interest in observability (Metrics, Logs, Traces) and experience with Grafana, Prometheus, or similar platforms
- Experience as an on-call user of Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo in a previous role or homelab
- Experience in fully remote, globally distributed teams
