Salary: USD 240,000 - 280,000 / annual
Zūm is transforming student mobility through its Connected Mobility Experience (CMX) platform, serving over 6,500 schools in the $50 billion student transportation market. You will be Zūm's first HQ-based front end engineer, operating as a technical lead while remaining hands-on as an individual contributor. This role combines strategic technical direction-setting with active code contribution. You'll own the front end architecture across Zūm's dispatch, school, vendor, and maps portals—enterprise, data-dense applications that districts, transportation vendors, and internal operations teams depend on for complex logistics management.
Key responsibilities include: owning front end technical decisions and architecture across the Angular codebase, particularly state management and reactive UI patterns using RxJS; leading the Ukraine-based front end team technically by setting direction, unblocking hard problems, and raising engineering craft standards while still writing production code; consolidating the tech lead function currently split across two people into a single clear owner; setting architectural standards for how Angular apps handle state, data density, and reactive patterns; identifying opportunities where AI tooling could meaningfully accelerate front end development; and building trust with product and backend teams to ensure fast, clean execution.
You'll work from HQ in Redwood Shores, CA (3 days/week on-site: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) in close collaboration with local Product and Engineering teams. The Ukraine team's hours overlap with HQ until roughly 11am PT, so no offshore hours required.
Required qualifications: Senior+ or Staff-level front end engineering experience with a proven track record of technical leadership; strong, hands-on expertise with Angular and ability to contribute quickly to the existing stack; experience with reactive UI patterns and RxJS or equivalent observables-based architecture; comfort building and owning enterprise, data-dense web applications; experience technically leading or mentoring other engineers, ideally across distributed teams; genuine interest in AI-driven automation; and experience consolidating or stepping into a shared tech lead function.
Preferred: startup background; experience with mobile web (not native mobile or React Native); domain experience in mobility, logistics, fleet, or operationally complex enterprise software; experience with mapping or GPS-adjacent UI; and close collaboration with design teams using Figma-based workflows.
