Wealthsimple is Canada's leading financial innovator serving over 4 million Canadians with a full suite of financial products including managed investing, trading, cryptocurrency, tax filing, and spending/saving tools. The company holds over $155 billion in assets under administration.
The Fraud Countermeasures team is part of Data Science and is responsible for growing Wealthsimple safely by balancing fraud losses with client friction. The team works in small pods pairing a fraud countermeasures lead with a data scientist and analytics developer, sitting alongside Product and Engineering on every feature launch.
This Staff individual contributor role owns the strategy for card fraud prevention—one of the highest-stakes problems at Wealthsimple. You will set direction for preventing application, transaction, and account takeover fraud across card products, working independently with real accountability for outcomes. This role has manager-level impact through expertise and influence rather than direct reports.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning fraud strategy and execution across application, transaction, and account takeover fraud for Wealthsimple's card products
- Managing the card fraud loss budget as volumes grow and guarding against attacks that could exceed budget
- Designing, backtesting, shipping, and tuning detection rules; setting decision thresholds on ML risk scores
- Weighing fraud losses prevented against operational cost and client experience before recommending approaches
- Partnering with Product and Engineering to build controls that prevent fraud without blocking legitimate clients (e.g., step-up authentication instead of hard declines)
- Guiding data scientists and analytics developers in your pod; mentoring junior teammates on strategy, rule building, and problem-solving
The role is open to candidates in any timezone in Canada and offers 20 vacation days, 4 wellness days, unlimited sick and mental health days, the ability to work outside Canada for up to 90 days per year, top-tier health benefits, group savings with employer match, and employee resource groups.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of experience in fraud prevention, including 3+ years working directly on card fraud (prepaid or credit) at an issuer, fintech, or payments platform
- Hands-on ownership of card fraud strategy across application, transaction, and account takeover fraud
- Advanced SQL; ability to write complex queries against transaction-level data independently
- Track record of building, backtesting, shipping, and tuning fraud rules; ability to explain precision, catch rate, and approval rate impact
- Experience quantifying fraud savings against operational and client experience costs to make clear recommendations
- Experience using AI tools in daily work with examples of where they changed output
- Ability to influence Product, Engineering, credit risk, operations, and external vendors toward decisions without direct authority
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership
- Nice to have: Knowledge of Visa and Mastercard network rules, dispute processes, and chargeback rails
