Form Energy is a climate-tech manufacturing company revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day iron-air battery systems. The company has secured contracts with leading US utilities and is ramping production at its West Virginia facility. As a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer, you will embed directly with Form Energy's hardest-working teams—scientists, engineers, operators, and business leaders—to identify and solve their highest-leverage problems through software and AI.
You will own the full lifecycle of applications: from understanding team pain points (fragile spreadsheets, manual handoffs, missing software) to designing and shipping end-to-end solutions. One quarter you might replace a load-bearing spreadsheet with a governed system of record; the next, prototype and deploy an AI agent that eliminates a week of manual work; the next, build a full-stack application that becomes how a team operates. You will not wait for perfect requirements—you diagnose bottlenecks, make judgment calls on what's worth building, and ship quickly.
Key responsibilities include: embedding with cross-functional teams to understand their hardest problems; hunting for leverage and acting on it; spearheading AI-driven automation (prototyping, shipping, and driving adoption); owning full-stack web applications (React/Next.js/TypeScript frontends, Python/FastAPI backends, PostgreSQL); turning expert knowledge and tribal spreadsheets into durable, maintainable systems; building governed, traceable data models with versioned revision history and role-based access; integrating with Form Energy's enterprise systems (Snowflake, Oracle, Arena, Jama, shop-floor systems) while respecting authoritative boundaries; shipping to production reliably via containerized services, CI/CD, and Kubernetes; using AI aggressively as a force multiplier in development; and working in a fast, prototype-to-product style with rapid iteration.
You will bring 8+ years of production software experience with a track record of owning complex applications end to end. Strong full-stack skills are essential: modern web frameworks (React/Next.js/TypeScript or equivalent) and production backend languages (Python/FastAPI strongly preferred), plus solid relational data modeling (PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy). AI-assisted and agentic development is required—you must demonstrate command of AI as a force multiplier and a track record of embedding it into your development workflow. This is a hands-on, senior individual-contributor role measured by problems solved, not tickets closed. The role is hybrid, requiring 3+ days per week onsite in Somerville, MA or Weirton, WV. Relocation assistance is available.
