Samsara is a publicly traded (NYSE: IOT) Connected Operations Cloud platform that helps organizations in agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing digitally transform their physical operations using IoT data. The company builds hardware including battery-powered wireless sensors, Linux-based IoT gateways, and internet-connected dashcams, alongside cloud software for fleet management and industrial monitoring. As a Staff Firmware Engineer, you will develop embedded software running on millions of devices deployed globally. You'll work across the full stack of hardware and software challenges: evaluating and selecting hardware components, bringing up new platforms from virgin silicon, building systems to detect meaningful events from sensor data (GPS, acceleration, temperature, video), and structuring data for efficient analysis across thousands of devices. Key responsibilities include: - Collaborating with electrical engineers on hardware architecture decisions (SoC selection, memory, sensor combinations) and validating prototypes that reach customers within months - Bringing new platforms and prototypes to life: configuring I/O, establishing communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, BLE), debugging system initialization, and turning unproven hardware into production products - Owning foundational firmware layers: peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, power management, and connectivity—the systems that determine whether field devices recover gracefully or require RMA - Optimizing battery-powered devices where firmware quality directly translates to years of device lifespan The tech stack includes C for MCU platforms, Golang for Linux-based gateways and backend services, Google protocol buffers for data structuring, and AWS technologies for data processing. Prior experience with these specific technologies is not required. This is a remote role for applicants in the US or Canada, offering autonomy and support within a high-growth, recently public company culture that emphasizes rapid career development and long-term impact on industries critical to global infrastructure.
