Life360 is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to design and own the company's on-device ML platform for its connected device portfolio (Tile trackers, Pet GPS devices). The role combines deep embedded systems expertise with edge ML specialization—you'll architect a reusable framework that enables sensor data sampling, on-device inference, and intelligent actions while respecting tight power and memory budgets on Cortex-M-class microcontrollers.
You are a firmware engineer first: fluent in RTOS internals, driver bring-up, power management, and real hardware debugging. You are an edge ML specialist second: capable of taking ML models from data science or training them yourself, then quantizing and optimizing them to run on kilobyte-constrained devices using modern AI-assisted tooling. The core value is owning the entire path from sensor register to inference result without handing off the hard parts.
This is a foundational role. Life360 is shipping its first on-device ML feature now but lacks a reusable platform. You'll transform that initial feature into the foundation for the rest of the portfolio. In year one, success means: architecting and shipping the inference platform to the fleet, root-causing production issues from device logs, remaining a credible firmware engineer across connectivity, OTA, power, drivers, and telemetry, and shipping 2–3 on-device ML features to the Pet GPS fleet informed by real device behavior.
The role reports to the Engineering Manager of Connected Devices and collaborates daily with firmware, app, cloud engineers, data science, hardware, operations, and data teams. Life360 is an AI-native company with ~97.8 million monthly active users across 180+ countries and 500+ remote-first employees. The company emphasizes AI tool usage in development and interviews; you may be asked to demonstrate proficiency with AI tools or discuss how you leverage them.
