Buildkite is seeking a Staff Engineer to join the Releases team, which is building a release control plane—a foundational platform that provides engineering teams with a trusted, auditable view of what shipped, where, and whether it met governance requirements. In this role, you'll own the technical direction of the Releases platform, designing the core architecture and data model for the canonical release entity and its relationships across services, environments, artifacts, and actors. You'll lead critical technical decisions around security, reliability, and scale, particularly for the immutable evidence trail and policy gate infrastructure. You'll drive complex cross-system integrations, including ingestion from Buildkite Pipelines and GitHub Deployments, and ensure the platform is extensible enough to support progressive delivery capabilities—canary analysis, staged rollouts, blue/green deployments, health-based promotion, and automatic rollback—without requiring customers to replace existing CD tooling. As a hands-on technical leader, you'll design, build, and scale systems trusted by some of the world's best engineering teams. You'll solve complex technical challenges around performance, reliability, and scalability, work closely with customers to understand their release and governance challenges, and deliver high-impact solutions. You'll investigate and resolve complex performance and reliability issues across the stack, from infrastructure patterns to backend services and data stores. You'll also share knowledge and drive engineering best practices across teams through documentation, mentorship, and pairing, and support the wider engineering organization by contributing to cross-team tooling, infrastructure, and frameworks. The ideal candidate has proven experience working in production environments at scale using Go, Ruby on Rails, or similar languages. Experience designing event-driven or audit-log systems, with knowledge of immutable records, event sourcing, or append-only data models, is a strong plus. Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and deploying complex containerized applications, familiarity with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, and comfort solving challenges in distributed systems, observability, and infrastructure reliability are essential. Domain expertise in CD systems, deployment pipelines, or release orchestration platforms (Spinnaker, Argo Rollouts, Flux, etc.), understanding of progressive delivery patterns, experience with DORA metrics and release governance, and background integrating with source control and CI/CD platforms are highly valued.
