Adyen is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the technical direction of its Payments organization, focusing on mobile and point-of-sale terminal experiences. This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role operating at the intersection of mobile technology, terminal systems, and backend services.
You will architect unified shopper journeys across devices and payment surfaces, solving complex challenges in reliability, performance, security, and global device compatibility. Key responsibilities include defining long-term technical strategy for mobile apps, SDKs, payment terminals, and distributed backend systems; leading resolution of complex technical issues at scale; acting as a strategic partner to Product, Design, Legal, and other stakeholders to translate business goals into executable plans; establishing clear architectural boundaries and APIs that enable cross-functional teams to move independently; mentoring engineers across levels; and championing observability, testing, and operational excellence.
You will drive technical decisions through ambiguity, balance short-term delivery with long-term investments, and work with external partners (OS providers, hardware vendors) to ensure robust, secure integrations. This role requires deep understanding of mobile architecture, SDK design, concurrency, performance, and large-scale distributed systems, with the ability to generalize complex processes into simple, flexible services.
Required qualifications: 10+ years of hands-on software engineering in production environments with proven Staff-level scope; 5+ years of direct mobile development experience with proficiency in either Android (Kotlin) or iOS (Swift); demonstrated ability to cross-train onto the other mobile platform; strong collaborative leadership skills; and self-starter mindset with ability to identify critical problems and drive solutions to completion.
