Shield AI is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the design and development of internal engineering tooling and observability systems. This role sits at the intersection of systems software, developer experience, and observability—treating internal tools as first-class products with the same rigor applied to customer-facing systems. You will work closely with engineers building complex autonomous systems and defense technologies, developing tools that make those systems easier to understand, diagnose, and work with. The primary focus is developer-facing observability: aggregating logs, telemetry, events, faults, and system state to help engineers quickly move from "something went wrong" to "I understand what happened and where to investigate." Key responsibilities include: - Building and maintaining observability infrastructure for C++ and Python applications - Designing and implementing developer-facing web services and React-based user interfaces - Creating visualizations and diagnostic tools that expose system behavior - Improving engineering workflows through better tooling and instrumentation - Understanding how complex software components expose diagnostic information and turning that understanding into better tools The technical scope spans internal tooling products, developer experience platforms, engineering-facing web services, UI/UX for system diagnostics, and licensing services. This is not a DevOps or CI/CD role; CI/CD platforms, build automation, and test execution pipelines are out of scope. You should be comfortable working within complex C++ software systems, understanding their behavior at a deep level, and designing solutions that improve the developer experience. The role emphasizes usability, reliability, maintainability, performance, and the overall experience of engineers using these tools.
