LaunchDarkly is seeking a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer to architect and evolve the Flag Delivery Network (FDN), a mission-critical global infrastructure responsible for delivering real-time feature flag updates to tens of millions of connected SDKs across web, mobile, and server environments at scale (hundreds of thousands to millions of updates per second). In this role, you will architect resilient, globally distributed systems optimized for high availability and low-latency delivery (single-digit milliseconds within regions). You'll own and evolve core components including the global edge delivery network, streaming infrastructure, and data synchronization protocols. You'll drive improvements in system availability, performance, and operational excellence by identifying bottlenecks and designing for failure modes. Key responsibilities include designing and building scalable backend infrastructure for feature flag delivery, collaborating cross-functionally with infrastructure, SDK, product, and security teams, and mentoring other engineers by modeling best practices in distributed systems development and systems thinking. You'll participate in on-call rotations, take initiative in incident response and post-incident reviews, and demonstrate strong ownership of system reliability and observability. This is a staff-level individual contributor role ideal for someone who thrives on building low-latency, high-availability systems at scale. You'll lead by example, driving operational excellence and owning systems throughout their lifecycle. The role requires deep technical expertise, a systems-thinking mindset, and a bias for action.
