Okta is seeking a Staff Engineer to join the FGA (Fine-Grained Authorization) Developer Tooling team and lead the evolution of the end-to-end developer experience across both open-source and SaaS offerings. This is a high-impact individual contributor role focused on defining technical direction and raising engineering standards across a critical platform.
The Developer Tooling team owns SDKs in Go, JavaScript, .NET, Python, Java, and other languages, along with CLI workflows, IDE integrations, GitHub automation, developer documentation, and release strategy. All development is conducted in the open as open source, with active community contribution review and integration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Define and drive technical direction for FGA SDKs, CLI, IDE integrations, and developer automation
- Lead architectural decisions for multi-language SDKs, leveraging and evolving the SDK generator framework
- Own and evolve the SDK generator framework, templates, and wrapper patterns to ensure cross-language consistency and long-term maintainability
- Establish standards across SDKs for authentication flows, error handling, retry logic, and rate limiting
- Ensure advanced SDK capabilities (BatchCheck, ListRelations, non-transactional writes) are implemented with appropriate parallelization and performance safeguards
- Own release and versioning strategy for SDKs and developer tooling
- Drive improvements to CLI workflows, GitHub Actions, CI pipelines, and developer documentation
- Ensure high engineering standards for testing, mocking, dependency management, and performance
- Lead development in open source, review community pull requests, and improve contribution workflows
- Partner with FGA Core on API design and internal consumers on developer-friendly interfaces
- Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the Developer Tooling team
The guiding principle is "One developer experience, many deployment models." This role requires someone who can think strategically about developer experience while executing tactically across multiple programming languages and platforms.
