Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for enterprise customers including Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft.
As Staff Engineer for Customer Onboarding, you will lead the architectural evolution of Adyen's merchant onboarding experience, transforming it into a seamless, high-velocity activation layer. This is a technical leadership role focused on applying AI and machine learning—particularly large language models—to solve complex onboarding, KYC (Know Your Customer), and risk assessment challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
**Drive Activation Velocity**: Design and lead the global onboarding systems architecture. You will build the orchestration logic that guides merchants through their lifecycle, minimizing time-to-value while maintaining system stability and reliability.
**Bridge Policy & Code**: Serve as the technical architect at the intersection of business logic and regulatory requirements. You will design an intelligent onboarding concierge system that uses real-time reasoning to ask only necessary questions, proactively resolving compliance blockers through natural dialogue powered by LLMs.
**Product Strategy**: Shape the strategic roadmap in partnership with the Director of Engineering, peer Staff Engineers, and Product teams. Move beyond feature delivery to architect innovative solutions that drive merchant success and accelerated activation by systematically addressing bottlenecks.
**Global Standardization & Mentorship**: Mentor engineers to establish technical standards ensuring the onboarding journey is compliant and performant across all regions, balancing local regulatory needs with a unified global architecture.
You are a systems architect with deep experience building resilient, distributed systems. You understand security-by-design principles, particularly around KYC, identity verification, and regulated data handling. You are proficient in Java and experienced building high-concurrency API architectures. You have hands-on experience (or strong technical interest) in production-grade LLM-powered systems, including prompt engineering, policy enforcement, evaluation frameworks, RAG architectures, and secure data handling. You can navigate large, global organizations to align diverse teams (Risk, Operations, Product) around a unified technical vision.
