Flutterwave is seeking a Staff Engineer to architect, maintain, and optimize core backend APIs that power payment infrastructure across Africa and globally. The role focuses on the Ledger, Acquiring, Payouts, and Identity systems—mission-critical APIs handling real money flows.
Key responsibilities include architecting and optimizing core backend APIs for high availability and zero-downtime operations across financial systems. You will scale and optimize database architecture to support massive transaction volumes and product launches, design and implement bulletproof idempotency mechanisms for money flows, and develop complex routing logic for payment methods to handle edge cases seamlessly. Additionally, you will lead technical direction and mentor senior engineers within the Core Systems team, and collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to support mission-critical payment infrastructure.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, with 8–10 years of backend software engineering experience specifically dealing with financial systems, ledgers, or payment gateways. You must have expert-level knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architecture, veteran-level experience in database optimization, query performance tuning, and schema design at scale, and deep understanding of transaction management, idempotency, and data integrity. Proven ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects with zero-downtime requirements is essential, along with exceptional problem-solving skills and strong commitment to system reliability and security.
