Vitalize Care is building the labor and capacity operating system for health systems, helping hospitals intelligently forecast demand, match staff, and coordinate patients. Hospitals currently manage staffing—their largest cost at ~60% of P&L—using spreadsheets and phone calls. Vitalize's software saves hospitals millions in unnecessary labor spend and gives clinical leaders back 10–20 hours weekly. The company has raised over $32M from top investors and customers.
As a Staff Engineer, you'll own the decision engine behind staffing recommendations, alerts, and workflows. You'll design and build the logic that helps clinical leaders make hundreds of staffing decisions daily under time pressure, replacing disconnected systems with software that reasons through problems, recommends actions, and eventually executes them safely.
Key responsibilities include: designing decision logic for staffing recommendations and alerts; owning systems that balance staffing rules, hospital policies, patient needs, and operational constraints; partnering with Product, Design, and other Engineers on complex solutions; working directly with clinical leaders to understand real-world staffing workflows; building explainable software so users trust and can override recommendations; and defining the boundary between automation and human judgment as Vitalize safely automates more hospital operations.
You'll bring expertise in TypeScript, strong systems thinking, comfort with edge cases, and the ability to work across the full tech stack. The role values curiosity about the "why," direct customer engagement, and clear communication with high ownership. The stack includes Bun, TypeScript, Effect, React, TanStack Router, and Planetscale.
Vitalize's culture emphasizes stepping in across roles, showing up for customers, naming hard problems first, and thinking bigger. Benefits include medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, flexible PTO, unlimited travel for customer visits, bi-annual off-sites, free meals, $5k relocation bonus, desk setup reimbursement, commuter benefits, and wellness stipend. Office is in Jackson Square, San Francisco.
