Pomelo is a leading fintech infrastructure company in Latin America, enabling businesses to launch and manage credit, debit, and prepaid cards with world-class security and compliance. The company operates a cloud-native platform with simple API integrations, serving 250+ team members across the region.
You will join the Engineering team as a Principal Engineer leading the technical expansion into the Brazilian market—a region with high technical and regulatory complexity. This is a strategic role bridging business, product, and technology to design high-impact solutions for the Brazilian fintech ecosystem.
Key responsibilities:
- Design end-to-end solutions for the Brazilian market, accounting for regulation, partner integrations, and critical dependencies
- Translate complex business problems into simple, scalable, and sustainable technical solutions
- Lead high-impact technical decisions (architecture, integrations, patterns) affecting multiple teams and products
- Define and evolve reference architectures and technical guidelines for Brazil operations
- Ensure scalability, performance, and resilience in core systems
- Anticipate risks around technical complexity, debt, and uncontrolled growth
- Balance delivery velocity against technical quality in a scale-up environment
- Lead POCs, technology evaluations, and adoption decisions
- Work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and business teams, influencing decisions without direct authority
- Participate in strategic discussions (customer engagements, RFPs, new solutions) from a technical perspective
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with complex production systems
- Proven experience as a Staff/Principal Engineer or equivalent
- Ability to define technical direction and make decisions with multi-team impact
- Strong abstraction and business-to-technology problem modeling skills
- Experience designing distributed systems, APIs, and scalable architectures (microservices, event-driven)
- Solid experience with Go, Java, Kotlin, or other modern backend languages
- Cloud experience (AWS or equivalent) and production operations expertise
- Ability to influence, align, and elevate technical standards across teams
- Sound judgment on technical trade-offs (cost, performance, scalability, time-to-market)
- Autonomy to identify structural problems and propose solutions proactively
- Fintech, payments, or credit experience highly valued
Desirable:
- Brazilian market knowledge (regulation, local integrations)
- Experience building platforms from zero or in scale-ups
- DDD, TDD, event sourcing expertise
- Complex integration and multi-partner ecosystem experience
