The Modernization Team is a newly formed, platform-level engineering group tasked with solving the deepest architectural challenges at Payoneer—problems too strategic and cross-cutting for individual product teams to own. This is not a feature team; instead, it operates as a force multiplier, taking on systemic platform issues, building shared infrastructure, and enabling all product teams to move faster and safer.
As a Staff Software Engineer on this team, you will own end-to-end technical initiatives including large-scale migrations, shared infrastructure development, and tooling that multiplies engineering output across the organization. You'll have significant influence in shaping team priorities, working practices, and engineering culture from the ground up.
The team operates with an agentic mindset, embedding AI-assisted development into every phase of work—from automated code generation and migration scripts to intelligent test generation and documentation. The goal is not just faster coding but building tools that amplify every engineer's productivity.
You bring 6+ years of backend engineering experience, primarily in Node.js, with strong fundamentals and production expertise. You have deep knowledge of distributed systems (messaging, caching, microservice patterns, failure modes) and AWS cloud infrastructure. You've driven architectural decisions with cross-team impact, led large-scale migration programs (monolith decomposition, data layer rearchitecture, messaging infrastructure migrations), and are comfortable with AI-assisted development tools as a daily practice. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration are essential.
Nice-to-have skills include .NET background (especially migration experience), platform infrastructure experience, and familiarity with event-driven patterns (outbox, saga).
