Illumio is seeking a Staff Engineer to join the CloudSecure team, leading quality and performance engineering for an enterprise-grade cloud security platform protecting workloads across AWS, Azure, and GCP. This role combines two critical focus areas: Product Quality & Automation (50%) and Quality Engineering & Infrastructure (50%).
In the Product Quality & Automation domain, you will design and execute comprehensive functional, integration, and end-to-end test strategies for CloudSecure features. You'll build and maintain scalable API, UI, and end-to-end automation frameworks, validating cloud security workflows including resource discovery, policy computation, flow ingestion, visualization, and compliance. You'll partner with engineering and product teams to define acceptance criteria, improve testability, and drive shift-left quality practices. You'll own defect triage, root cause analysis, and release readiness for your feature areas.
In Quality Engineering & Infrastructure, you'll design and execute large-scale performance and scalability tests simulating enterprise customer environments with thousands of workloads, hundreds of VPCs/VNETs, and millions of flow records. You'll build automated performance benchmarks and regression suites to detect latency, throughput, and resource utilization regressions. You'll validate system behavior under stress, peak load, and long-running endurance scenarios, and design chaos engineering experiments including database failovers, Kafka failures, network partitions, cloud API throttling, and pod failures. You'll own quality gates within CI/CD, drive cross-module integration testing, and develop tooling that enables developers to self-serve test environments and automation execution.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's in Computer Science (Master's preferred), 9+ years building automation for SaaS or cloud-native distributed systems, strong programming skills in Python, Go, JavaScript, or similar languages, hands-on experience with automation frameworks like Cypress, Playwright, or Pytest, and experience designing automation for APIs, UI, and distributed microservices. You must have hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP including networking and security constructs, CI/CD pipelines, and a strong understanding of distributed systems, REST APIs, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures. The ability to debug application code and work closely with developers to identify root causes is essential.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with performance and load testing tools (k6, Locust, JMeter, Gatling), application performance profiling, observability platforms (Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog), chaos engineering tools (Litmus, Gremlin), Kubernetes and Docker, Terraform, network security and segmentation, and testing enterprise-scale multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
This position requires 5 on-site days per week at Illumio's Sunnyvale, CA headquarters. The role involves access to software subject to U.S. export controls, and any offer is contingent upon compliance capacity.
