Dutchie is a comprehensive technology platform powering dispensary operations across 40+ markets in the US and Canada. Founded in 2017 and backed by $600M+ in funding from top-tier investors, Dutchie is the leading technology company in the cannabis space.
As a Staff Engineer, you'll work across teams to solve the hardest technical problems and steer the platform's technical direction. You'll operate at the core of Dutchie's enterprise-grade retail software, making it better, faster, and more reliable. Your responsibilities include:
- Setting technical direction and making architecture decisions that shape how systems evolve, aligning teams behind them
- Making real improvements to enterprise-grade retail software at scale
- Working with stakeholders to scope, sharpen, and stress-test customer-facing features
- Engaging directly with customers to understand their workflows and pain points, then translating insights into better products
- Partnering across the organization on unified solutions for cross-team problems
- Mentoring other engineers and helping them grow their skills
- Helping teams plan, estimate, and de-risk large initiatives through effective breakdown and sequencing
- Setting the bar for engineering judgment, code quality, and craft
You'll bring 8+ years of experience building and running production systems at scale. Deep hands-on expertise in modern backend stacks is essential—Dutchie uses .NET/C#, TypeScript, Ruby, React, PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and MongoDB. You have pride in your craft: clean, tested, easy-to-maintain code.
Critically, you're AI-native in how you work. You routinely use LLMs for research, diagnosis, planning, code writing and review, and monitoring. You're comfortable in an agentic-first environment and know how to leverage AI to ship better solutions faster and safer than possible by hand alone. You raise your team's baseline by turning one-off wins into repeatable practices.
You make the people around you better—your biggest impact is raising everyone else's output and judgment. You're genuinely curious about customers and let their pain points guide team priorities. When problems span multiple teams with no clear owner, you scope them, break them into executable pieces, and keep teams aligned. You can hold multiple threads simultaneously and reprioritize cleanly when things shift. You communicate well, making hard trade-offs clear to engineers, product, and leadership. You own outcomes, not tasks—accountable from ambiguous problem to shipped production system.
Bonus experience includes cannabis industry knowledge, POS/ecommerce/payments/retail tech, cloud-native infrastructure (AWS), third-party integrations, and bringing AI-assisted workflows to engineering teams.
