As Staff Embedded Software Engineer for Camera Firmware, you will lead the technical development of entirely new camera categories while ensuring reliability across a multi-million device global fleet. Reporting to the Camera Firmware Manager at HQ in San Mateo, this is a high-impact technical leadership role requiring deep collaboration across Hardware, Product, Backend, and Frontend teams. Key responsibilities include: spearheading end-to-end lifecycle of new camera categories; owning firmware roadmap and large-scale architectural changes; engineering high-performance features across bare-metal MCU firmware, secure bootloaders, Linux kernel optimizations, and concurrent userspace services; solving complex system-level challenges (race conditions, memory corruption, hardware-software timing issues at fleet scale); balancing hardware security, performance, power efficiency, and observability; partnering with CV, Streaming, and Storage teams on vertically integrated edge computing features; and championing reliability-first culture for 1.5M perpetually online devices. Required: BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field; 10+ years professional experience in systems software for performance/resource-constrained environments; 5+ years building Linux-based platforms; demonstrated leadership of large-scale cross-functional initiatives from concept to production; proven experience with initial board bring-up and hardware-software co-design for first-generation devices; hands-on experience with low-level protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, USB) and debugging hardware-software interactions; experience designing concurrent/multithreaded firmware services; strong understanding of modern operating systems, computer architecture, and compute/memory/storage trade-offs; proficiency in C++ or Golang; familiarity with Bash scripting and Python for tooling.
