Salary: USD 110,000 - 370,000 / annual
Orenda develops, builds, owns, and operates battery energy storage projects in dense urban environments to make the grid more efficient and bridge the gap between renewable energy and electricity consumption. The company combines renewable energy projects with proprietary asset management technology.
As Staff Electrical Engineer, Interconnection, you will be the technical leader for the interconnection process across Orenda's portfolio. You report to the Director of Origination Engineering and work within the Origination Team, which identifies potential project sites, performs site diligence, prepares interconnection applications, interprets system studies, and manages the development pipeline.
Key responsibilities include:
- Qualify originated sites against sizing, feeder proximity, interconnection cost estimates, and utility specifications
- Validate every interconnection ruling against the original application and classify project viability using internal rubrics
- Flag overscoped rulings and negotiate cost reductions with utility project managers and engineers
- Deliver data analysis including substation capacity analysis from interconnection queues and flag significant headroom changes
- Provide technical mentorship and support to designers
- Produce engineering drawings (single-line diagrams, site plans) for utility interconnection or design iterations
- Feed site screening patterns, CESIR trends, and specification improvement proposals back to the Principal Engineer
You will engage directly with utility engineers in meetings, RFIs, and negotiations. The role requires ownership of recurring analytical deliverables with hard deadlines and comfort with complex technical analysis.
Required qualifications: 4+ years in utility distribution planning, interconnection, or DER engineering; demonstrated success reviewing interconnection studies (CESIR or equivalent); working knowledge of IEEE 1547 and state interconnection processes (NY SIR strongly preferred); experience engaging utility engineers directly; ability to produce engineering drawings in AutoCAD; Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
Preferred: Con Edison territory experience, battery storage project exposure, load flow or short circuit study experience (CYME or Synergi), Professional Engineer (PE) license.
This is a full-time, in-office position based in Brooklyn, NY, requiring five days per week on-site with regular travel to project sites within the NYC area.
