Valar Atomics is seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical systems for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. This role carries principal technical authority for the electrical discipline, setting engineering standards, directing power system studies, and leading substation and protection design.
Key responsibilities include developing electrical load lists and performing comprehensive power system studies (load flow, short circuit analysis per ANSI/IEC, voltage drop, motor starting, harmonic analysis) using industry-standard tools like SKM Power Tools or ETAP. You will prepare arc flash hazard analysis to IEEE 1584, develop substation grounding calculations to IEEE 80, and size transformers, cables, switchgear, capacitor banks, and UPS/battery systems.
You will develop single-line diagrams for MV and LV distribution systems from utility interface through motor control centers and final distribution boards, prepare equipment arrangement and layout drawings, cable schedules, tray routing, and underground duct bank designs. The role includes specifying MV switchgear, LV switchboards, MCCs, distribution panelboards, transformers, bus ducts, VFDs, UPS systems, and standby generator packages, as well as preparing electrical area classification drawings and specifying hazardous area equipment to NEC/CEC 500 or IEC 60079 standards.
Additional responsibilities encompass preparing protection relay settings studies and time-current coordination plots, specifying protection relays and metering equipment, developing relay panel arrangement drawings and DC control schematics, and preparing technical specifications and data sheets for electrical equipment. You will evaluate vendor bids, review vendor drawings and type test reports, and witness factory acceptance tests. Leadership activities include vendor pre-qualification, technical bid evaluation, factory audits for safety-related equipment, and mentoring junior electrical engineers.
You will coordinate with instrumentation & control engineers on motor and drive control interfaces, with civil and structural disciplines on substation layout, and represent the electrical discipline at design reviews, HAZOP studies, and regulatory interactions. The role is embedded within Valar's Fuel Manufacturing engineering group, working alongside I&C, mechanical, and nuclear safety engineers in a collaborative environment that demands technical precision and strong safety culture.
