San Francisco Compute Company is building a liquid market for GPU offtake contracts—enabling companies to buy and sell compute capacity flexibly rather than being locked into multi-year fixed-price agreements. This solves a critical financing problem: GPU cluster developers and lenders need certainty before construction, but end customers (especially startups) can't afford the risk of long-term commitments on expensive infrastructure.
You'll join as a Staff Design Engineer, responsible for building exceptionally high-fidelity, polished interfaces across the product. This is a role for someone who bridges design and engineering—perhaps a designer who codes, or an engineer with strong design instincts. You'll raise the bar for visual quality, interaction design, motion, and performance across all product surfaces.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building high-fidelity, polished interfaces
- Raising the bar for frontend craft, interaction design, motion, and visual detail
- Partnering closely with product and engineering to ship delightful experiences
- Making sound architectural decisions for frontend systems that scale
- Mentoring other engineers on design sensibility and frontend craft
- Growing into broader product ownership, understanding customer needs and business context
You should have strong design instincts but prefer to build rather than spec. You have strong opinions about product quality and can articulate specific improvements to products you use. You've shipped genuinely complex frontend components—whether the complexity was technical (performance, real-time data, animation) or experiential (making something hard feel simple). Deep expertise in a modern JS framework (React, Vue, Svelte, or SolidJS) is required, along with a track record of shipping interfaces with real visual and interaction craft.
Staff+ level autonomy is essential: you operate independently, understand business context well enough to make good tradeoffs, and grow into broader product ownership. Startup or early-stage experience is valued, as is background in developer tools or technically dense product spaces. The company offers competitive salary, generous equity, visa sponsorship, 401(k) matching, comprehensive health insurance, unlimited PTO, parental leave, daily lunch, and an unlimited office book budget.
