Archer Technologies is building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed to carry four passengers with minimal noise. This Staff Design Engineer role focuses on thermal and lubrication systems—a critical subsystem for the aircraft's electric propulsion and power management.
You will lead the design and development of integrated thermal lubrication systems from concept through production. This includes specifying pumps, filters, heat exchangers, pressure relief valves, and related components while developing system architectures that optimize thermal management and lubrication performance. You'll create detailed CAD models, technical drawings, and system specifications, collaborating closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for production.
On the analysis side, you'll perform 1D system modeling and simulation using tools like GT-Power, AMESim, or MATLAB/Simulink. You'll conduct thermal and fluid flow analysis, utilize CFD analysis (StarCCM+ preferred) to optimize designs, and develop performance models for various operating conditions. You'll support trade studies balancing system performance, weight, and packaging—critical constraints in aerospace.
Testing and validation are core responsibilities. You'll design custom lubrication test equipment and fixtures, plan and execute component and system-level testing programs, operate test equipment, analyze results, and lead troubleshooting efforts. You'll support certification testing and documentation required for FAA/EASA approval.
As a Staff-level engineer, you'll provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, interface with cross-functional teams (propulsion, manufacturing, aerodynamics, development test), drive supplier relationships, and contribute to DFMEA and reliability assessments.
Required: Bachelor's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years in fluid systems, lubrication, or thermal management design. Proficiency in CAD (NX, Creo), 1D modeling tools, and strong fundamentals in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. Bonus qualifications include CFD experience, aerospace/aviation background, lubricant formulation knowledge, aerospace certification familiarity, and electric/hybrid vehicle systems experience.
