You will be the Staff Database Engineer responsible for helping product teams store and access data effectively at scale. This is a hands-on, software-engineer-first role focused on OLTP systems, not BI or analytics engineering. You'll be the go-to expert when product engineers ask "which database should this live in?" and "will this access pattern hold up?" You'll lead large infrastructure projects like migrations, build the platform that engineers interact with, and drive the largest, load-bearing changes to the data infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include: leading migrations of product workloads; providing product engineers with clear guidance on data storage and access patterns; building reusable primitives (data-sync utilities, ORM best practices, schema/index reviews) so teams stop reinventing patterns; and expanding the product-data platform over time into caching, search, and event streaming.
You'll work cross-functionally with product engineering teams, platform/infrastructure teams, and have company-wide impact across the entire engineering organization.
Required qualifications: hands-on experience with databases in production (OLTP access patterns, indexing, query optimization, schema design); comfort writing code in the product stack and reasoning at the database layer; deep expertise with a major relational engine (Postgres strongly preferred) in high-volume production; expertise in schema design, indexing, query optimization, and zero-downtime migrations on large live tables; experience scaling systems through significant traffic and data growth in domains like advertising analytics, fintech, large-scale consumer SaaS, or marketplaces; strong software engineering ability (writes, reviews, ships production code); flexible problem solving; strong communication skills; deep sense of ownership; builder mentality.
Nice-to-haves: experience building shared platform primitives (data-sync tooling, ORM best practices, caching, search, queues/event streaming); payments or financial data experience; cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and observability/performance tooling experience.
