Quora is a remote-first, privately held company operating two major platforms: Quora (a global knowledge-sharing platform with millions of monthly visitors) and Poe (an AI-powered platform providing access to multiple language models including GPT, Claude, Grok, and thousands of others). The company's mission is to grow the world's collective intelligence through data-driven decision-making and experimentation.
The Data Team at Quora is highly empowered and plays a central role in shaping product and company strategy. As a Staff Data Scientist, you will work across multiple domains including user growth, content quality, monetization, personalization, marketplace dynamics, and long-term company strategy. You'll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to devise measurements, design randomized controlled experiments, build visualizations, and solve complex, open-ended problems that uncover usage patterns and opportunities.
Key responsibilities include: owning ambiguous, high-impact problem spaces from question framing through implementation; partnering with stakeholders and leadership to shape product strategy; designing and evaluating experiments to measure impact; analyzing data to uncover root causes of metric movements; developing tools, methodologies, and frameworks to advance data literacy across the organization; and mentoring other data scientists to raise team standards and multiply impact.
Example projects span modeling long-term growth, improving homepage feed relevance and personalization, analyzing drivers of user engagement and question-asking behavior, optimizing marketplace efficiency, and evaluating monetization initiatives.
The role emphasizes balancing rigor with pragmatism, leveraging Quora's rich and diverse data sets for exploration and creativity. You'll work within a culture rooted in transparency, idea-sharing, and experimentation, and must be available for coordination hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm Pacific Time).
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years work experience in an analytical or quantitative role, including 5+ years as a Data Scientist or similar title, with demonstrated success at senior or staff level scope and autonomy
- Demonstrated ability to tackle difficult data questions requiring deep ownership of product areas and/or leading cross-functional, cross-team efforts
- Expertise with statistical techniques (regression, hypothesis testing, causal inference) and their practical application
- Experience mentoring other data scientists and raising team standards through best practices and process improvements
- Effective communication skills: ability to translate ambiguous business needs into analytical questions and explain technical results to executives and cross-functional partners
- Extensive experience using procedural programming languages (Python, R) for data manipulation, modeling, and analysis; comfort working in production codebases
- Strong judgment blending quantitative rigor with product intuition and common sense
- Availability for meetings and impromptu communication during coordination hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm Pacific Time)
PREFERRED:
- 2+ years evaluating recommender systems in offline analysis and online experiments
- Experience setting technical direction or strategy for a team or major workstream
- Experience with large data sets and distributed computing tools (Presto/Trino)
- Active Quora user with product curiosity
