Coinbase is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to architect and lead the market data infrastructure that powers institutional trading across the Everything Exchange. You will own the systems responsible for generating, capturing, normalizing, and distributing real-time market data at low latency—the ticker plant and distribution backbone of a unified trading platform.
In this role, you'll architect low-latency, high-throughput systems that serve trading systems across Coinbase. Key responsibilities include building and operating market data components such as feed handlers, normalization engines, distribution systems, and venue connectivity. You'll design systems that handle real-time market data with minimal latency while maintaining reliability and performance. You'll contribute to observability, participate in on-call rotations, and lead incident response efforts.
You'll write high-quality, well-tested code and help raise engineering standards on a lean, high-impact team. Collaboration is essential—you'll partner with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver market data capabilities that support Coinbase's institutional trading ambitions.
Required qualifications include 5+ years of backend engineering experience with a proven track record building and maintaining production low-latency systems. You must have hands-on experience with market data systems, including feed handlers, normalization, or distribution. Proficiency in low-latency Java or C++ is essential, along with experience in high-throughput messaging frameworks like Aeron or SBE. Familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols (FIX, ITCH/OUCH, multicast) is required. You should have a track record of delivering features end-to-end and operating systems you build. Experience using generative AI responsibly to improve workflow efficiency is valued.
Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges." The role offers the opportunity to architect market data infrastructure from the ground up with startup-level ownership and Coinbase's institutional reach.
