Salary: USD 168,600 - 215,000 / annual

Root Insurance is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join the Data Platform team and lead financial data operations, including commissions payments, incentive programs, and critical backend financial systems. You will drive complex technical initiatives across engineers within your domain, ensuring accuracy, scalability, and reliability of data pipelines powering financial processes. In this role, you will operate as a technical leader making architectural decisions with lasting impact. You will partner closely with Finance, Product, and Engineering stakeholders to define strategy, shape the technical roadmap, and deliver systems supporting high-stakes financial workflows. Root has built an end-to-end financial data operations solution with multiple data collection tools, scoring pipelines, and analytics interfaces used by analysts, data scientists, and finance teams to build payments and incentives programs. Key responsibilities include: - Partner with Finance, Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Insurance experts to set quarterly strategy - Identify and socialize important technical initiatives that increase product, system, and team effectiveness - Coach and guide engineers on your team in planning experiments and projects aligned with strategic objectives - Contribute code each development cycle to advance team impact - Lead by example in incident response and continuously improve system resiliency - Coordinate with Staff Engineers across the organization to establish and evangelize standards and best practices - Achieve platform-level tooling to enable faster data source onboarding, partner data integration, faster experimentation cycles, and improved analytics/data science infrastructure Root is a technology company revolutionizing personal insurance with telematics-based pricing and a modern customer experience. Requirements: - 8+ years of data engineering or software engineering experience with extensive expertise in data engineering - Proficiency in Python and SQL - Proficiency in Redshift, Spark, Apache Iceberg, and Terraform - Proficiency in Airflow and dbt for orchestration and transformation - Expertise in AWS cloud architecture - Proven leadership of projects involving multiple teams across functional domains - Excellent communication skills with both engineering colleagues and senior business leaders Bonus qualifications: - Expertise in building large-scale finance, payments, and commissions systems
