Sila Nanotechnologies is a next-generation battery materials company focused on powering the world's transition to clean energy. The company engineers and manufactures breakthrough battery materials that significantly increase energy density while reducing size and weight, enabling smaller, more powerful batteries for consumer devices and electric vehicles.
As a Staff Battery Engineer on the Battery Performance team, you will design and optimize cutting-edge batteries featuring Sila's next-generation anode material for diverse customer applications. This is a hands-on technical role requiring deep expertise in comprehensive performance evaluation of battery components including electrolytes, anodes, cathodes, foils, and separators. You will integrate novel components and innovations to optimize gravimetric energy density (GED), cycle life, and safety tradeoffs.
Key responsibilities include developing and executing comprehensive test plans for multilayer and cylindrical cells from initial component integration through full qualification; applying advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling to interpret results and inform design iterations; performing thorough failure analysis on prototype and customer qualification units; supporting internal and external development programs by designing and refining cell prototyping processes; developing and integrating novel testing capabilities and methodologies at material, electrode, and cell levels; and communicating complex technical ideas and results to partners and cross-functional teams.
You will need solid understanding of battery performance and failure mechanisms (electrolyte degradation, material and cell-level swell, lithium plating), demonstrated experience with characterization and integration of novel battery components, proficiency with data analysis and modeling, hands-on cell prototyping experience, and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects. Required qualifications: B.S. in engineering or science with 8+ years of experience (fewer years acceptable with advanced degree), or equivalent related experience.
The role involves lab work with personal protective equipment, computer-based analysis, movement between facilities, and potential respirator use. This is an onsite position in Alameda, CA.
