GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (Ruby) to lead the DAP Repository Flows team within its Duo Agent Platform (DAP) organization. This role sits at the intersection of AI product engineering and backend infrastructure, focusing on two core areas: DAP onboarding (helping customers quickly configure projects to use the Duo Agent Platform) and repository/background flows (autonomous and scheduled agents that operate on customer codebases).
As a Staff-level engineer, you will set technical direction for the team, make architecture decisions that shape how agentic experiences are built on top of DAP, and drive complex initiatives across team boundaries. Key responsibilities include designing and delivering autonomous/scheduled agents, refining the onboarding experience for rapid customer productivity, partnering across the broader DAP organization on shared interfaces and platform capabilities, mentoring senior and intermediate engineers, and identifying/resolving the team's hardest technical problems through sound design.
You will contribute to a culture of autonomy, ownership, high-context sharing, and async-first collaboration in a small, distributed team with growth plans.
Required qualifications: deep, hands-on production experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails; demonstrated experience integrating LLMs into products (product integration, not model training); experience building agentic systems (autonomous or semi-autonomous agents taking actions on behalf of users); track record of designing and shipping complex, high-scale systems and driving technical direction across teams; strong written communication for distributed, async-first environments; and the judgment and influence expected of a staff-level engineer (setting direction, unblocking others, multiplying team impact).
