Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Mimir Query squad within the Databases team. Mimir is an open-source, horizontally scalable metrics database built on Prometheus, offered as a hosted service in Grafana Cloud and as an on-premise solution. The Databases team owns and operates telemetry databases (Mimir, Loki, Tempo, Pyroscope) serving 7,000+ customers including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce.
The Mimir squad consists of three sub-squads (Ingest, Storage, Query) that maintain the Mimir OSS project and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics across AWS, GCP, and Azure at massive scale. As a Staff engineer on the Query squad, you will focus on optimizing the efficiency and resilience of querying metrics at large volumes. Performance and reliability are critical to keeping the offering competitive.
Key responsibilities include: taking an active role in influencing the roadmap and your career objectives; collaborating with teammates to deliver new features and iterate based on results; driving projects from conception through production operations; contributing to the open-source ecosystem; designing, building, operating, and maintaining critical systems with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability; participating in follow-the-sun on-call rotations; supporting team members through design discussions and code reviews; and shepherding automated release rollouts.
You will work with Go, Kubernetes, and distributed systems at scale. The role involves both greenfield projects and production optimization work discovered through operating systems in production. This is a fully remote position for candidates in US time zones.
