Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Mimir Query squad within the Databases team. Mimir is an open-source, horizontally scalable metrics database built on Prometheus. The Databases team owns and operates the telemetry databases (Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, Pyroscope for profiles) that power Grafana Cloud, a fully managed observability platform trusted by 7,000+ customers including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce.
The Mimir squad consists of three sub-squads (Ingest, Storage, Query) that maintain the Mimir OSS project and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics across AWS, GCP, and Azure at massive scale. As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Query squad, you will focus on optimizing the efficiency and resilience of querying metrics at large volumes. Performance and reliability are critical to keeping the offering competitive.
Key responsibilities include:
- Influence roadmap decisions and drive your own career objectives
- Deliver new features and iterate based on results
- Own projects from conception through production operations
- Contribute to the open-source Mimir project and related ecosystems
- Design, build, operate, and maintain critical distributed systems
- Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and own service reliability
- Lead design discussions, mentor team members, and collaborate across squads
- Drive performance and reliability improvements discovered through production operations
The role involves writing and reviewing PRs, shepherding automated release rollouts, and taking an active leadership role in technical decisions. You'll work with Go, Kubernetes, and distributed systems at scale across major cloud providers.
