Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to help architect and build the next generation of their observability platform. As Grafana's cloud business scales, the company is refactoring its core architecture to be fully multi-tenant and serve as a platform for both open-source and proprietary apps. This is a high-impact role focused on transforming Grafana into a scalable observability app platform where applications can integrate directly with dashboards, alerts, incidents, and telemetry. You will own significant technical scope across the platform, including designing and implementing features, authoring design documents, shaping the technical roadmap, and mentoring other engineers. Your responsibilities include coding new features, enhancing operational systems based on production insights, actively participating in design reviews, and collaborating across teams to ensure safe rollout of changes to a platform used by millions of users and thousands of customers including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce. The role requires strong operational experience—you should have built systems and been responsible for operating them in production. You'll need expertise with SaaS platforms at scale, including distributed systems challenges like scalability, multi-tenancy, data isolation, and high availability. Backend work is primarily in Go, though the company welcomes engineers eager to learn the language. You'll participate in on-call rotations (weekday 12h x 5d and weekend 24h x 2d) and have access to modern AI coding assistants and frontier models to accelerate development. Grafana is a 100% remote company with 1,600+ team members across 40+ countries, backed by top-tier investors including Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
