Laurel is an AI-powered time intelligence platform serving major professional services firms (EY, Aprio, Crowell & Moring, Frost Brown Todd). The company processes over 1 billion work activities annually using proprietary machine learning to help accounting and law firms capture, analyze, and optimize time data—connecting it to business outcomes to increase profitability and improve client delivery. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you'll architect and develop the backend systems powering this AI Time platform, directly shaping engineering practices across the stack. You'll report to the VP of Engineering and work alongside a talented team of engineers, product managers, and designers. Key responsibilities include designing and building efficient, reusable, and reliable backend code; collaborating cross-functionally to define technical specifications and measures of success; identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks; mentoring junior developers; staying current with industry trends and proactively suggesting improvements; implementing automated testing and CI/CD pipelines; and participating in on-call rotations. You'll engage directly with product and customer success teams to flesh out business requirements and systems design. Your input on product direction and engineering best practices will be highly valued. Required qualifications: 6+ years of professional backend software development experience; strong understanding of TypeScript, Node.js, messaging queues (AWS SQS), and MongoDB; bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Nice-to-have skills include Python (Django, FastAPI, Flask), Airflow, PostgreSQL, NestJS, and AI domain experience. You should have strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, a customer-centric mindset, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities. Laurel is at a pivot point—the product resonates with customers, the direction is compelling, but execution at scale is the next frontier. You'll stand at the forefront of how AI transforms work itself.
