Monzo is a digital bank on a mission to make money work for everyone. We're transforming traditional banking with innovative products including personal and business accounts, joint accounts, credit cards, savings, investments, and pensions—primarily in the UK with expansion plans ahead.
Our Engineering organization spans 650+ engineers building an in-house banking platform. We work across product, infrastructure, security, payments, finance, customer operations, financial crime, and data. Engineers collaborate cross-functionally to solve complex challenges with real customer impact.
This Staff Backend Engineer role is based in Barcelona on a hybrid model (3 days/week in office). You'll join one of our product squads within our wider "collectives"—self-governing business units of ~100 people focused on Money, Borrowing, Fincrime, Customer Operations, Platform, Personal Banking, or Business Banking. All collectives are actively hiring backend engineers.
Your day-to-day involves collaborating with product managers, designers, mobile/web engineers, data analysts, researchers, and others to build and support a specific part of Monzo. You'll work on backend systems that power our customer-facing products and internal infrastructure.
Tech stack: Go for application code, Cassandra for persistent data, Kafka for async messaging, Envoy Proxy for RPC, Kubernetes and Docker for orchestration, AWS for infrastructure, and React for internal dashboards. We also operate two physical datacenters with third-party connections.
We value learning and diverse backgrounds—no formal qualifications or degree requirements. We contribute to open source and maintain a public engineering blog. The interview process is standardized across collectives, with final placement based on your skills, experience, preferences, and business alignment.
