Monzo is a fintech company on a mission to make money work for everyone, transforming traditional banking through innovative digital solutions. As a Staff Backend Engineer (L60), you'll work on core infrastructure and systems that power personal and business banking, savings, investments, and credit products for millions of UK customers.
You'll be part of a 650-person engineering organization within a 5,500-person company, working on technically challenging problems at scale. The role involves designing and building backend systems using Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy Proxy, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS. You'll contribute to open-source software, participate in knowledge-sharing sessions across the company, and have the opportunity to move between teams or specialize based on your preferences.
Key technologies: Go for application code, Cassandra for persistent data storage, Kafka for asynchronous messaging, Envoy Proxy for RPC, Kubernetes and Docker for orchestration, and AWS for infrastructure. The team also maintains two physical datacenter sites with third-party connectivity.
As a Staff-level engineer, you'll be expected to guide technical direction, mentor other engineers, and drive architectural decisions across multiple teams or domains. You'll work directly with colleagues across the company and help shape how Monzo's engineering organization scales.
The role offers competitive compensation, equity, and comprehensive benefits. You can work from the London office, Cardiff office, or fully remote within the UK.
